MARIEVALE BIRD SANCTUARY

With over 300 different bird species, this 1 000ha reserve is one of the best bird sanctuaries in South Africa. Set against the backdrop of mining activities on the East Rand, Marievale Bird Sanctuary is a popular destination for city-dwellers from the surrounding area. Large reed beds occur in this wetland area which is formed by the Blesbokspruit.

There are three well-constructed hides from which visitors can observe a dazzling variety of waterfowl such as flamingo, African spoonbill, numerous kinds of duck and geese and waders that migrate from the northern hemisphere to escape the cold winters there. Large flocks of spurwing geese are found here in winter.

The reserve offers no accommodation. There is a picnic spot near one of the hides. Visitors can explore the reserve by means of a system of hiking trails, starting at the main gate where a large board provides the necessary information. The reserve is open throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.

How to get there:
From Nigel take the R42 towards Delmas and follow signposts to Marievale.
